Rosehall House
Originally dating from 1822 with additions in 1873 this B listed property is most famous for its occupants during the 1920’s. In 1920 the 2nd Duke of Westminster purchased this property and being reputed as being the richest man Britain at this time he travelled far and wide. In 1923 The Duke was in Monte Carlo where he met Coco Chanel, and so the story of their affair begins. Rosehall house became their Highland retreat and “love nest”. The Duke gave Coco free reign on decorating the house, her simple brown and beige designs, her hand painted French floral wallpaper and her simple but elegant linear designs on walls and fireplaces were implemented throughout, she even installed a bidet in a bathroom, thought to be the first in a Scottish home. In 1928 the Duke sold the house to a family whom to this day still live in a cottage on the grounds. The Coco Chanel interior was never redecorated, and although a pale shade of its former condition still remains.
