Arrow Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery Bristol 2, Portishead - May 10

Following on from my visit to the other HAA Battery in nearby Portbury I was surprised to see another one at the other end of the town.

A Second World War heavy anti aircraft battery. In 1941 it mounted three 3.7-inch mobile guns, increased to four with GL Mark II radar in 1942. These were replaced by four 4.5-inch guns in 1943. It was manned by 353 Battery of the Royal Artillery Regiment in 1941, and by 463 Battery of the 133rd Royal Artillery Regiment in 1942. The battery is located on Weston Down, Portishead and covers an area that measures 185m by 143m. The battery comprises four octagonal gunpits arranged around a command post. Two small circular earthworks also seem to be associated with the battery and are located nearby. Ancillary buildings comprising nissen huts are located to the northwest of the battery along either side of Down Road.

    It started off promising

But then became an overgrown nightmare where only the gun doors were still visible

Then the most horrible smell known to man laid around the corner. Yes on a hot sunny day a steaming pile of manure/cow shit. Just lovely.

I didn't hang around after finding this huge pile of shit.

Impressive security measures here. I'm sure that sort of policy at places like High Royds would save a lot on wages. Nice pictures

They had that policy at St Marys - human variety though. Chauffeur was very nearly a victim
