Arrow Rednaught, Bristol - May 2010

After dreadnaught it was on to 'Rednaught' which should probably be called 'The Malago Storm Interceptor' - It gets its rednaught name from the more typical red brick construction. It probably dates from around the 1860's. After a cholera epidemic in 1848 the council set about putting in place a proper sewage and drainage system. The vast majority of which still serves the population of Bristol today..

It runs out to the River Avon but at high tide the river runs in. So yes it is rather silty muddy at the far end. Complete with shopping trolley at each end.

I didn't want to hang around too long down the far end exit as it was nearing high tide and I could sense that any minute the water would start coming in and the early morning tide had filled to the ceeling!

The ladder randomly was left there (it wasn't our access!) and went up to a manhole cover that was probably 30-40ft up with no ledges for your safety. Slip and its one long drop
