Arrow Bypass - Bradford Beck Flood Alleviation Scheme

Bypass - Bradford Beck Flood Alleviation Scheme

"Institute of Civil Engineering Yorkshire Association Award 1994,

For excellence in the concept, design and execution of Civil Engineering Works

Originator: City of Bradford Metropolitan Council
Designer: City of Bradford Metropolitan Council - Engineering Division
    Contractor: Johnston Construction"

Visited by em_jay_ess and myself recently, on what turned out to be the best underground explore we have ventured on to date. Really amazes me that a feet of civil engineering perfection like this lives right beneath the streets of Bradford (unbeknown to people walking above)!

We entered the system via the Macro drain slightly down stream of the conditioning house (The dude in the gas mask is Pee Pee the shurper a.k.a Polish Petch).

After a short walk downstream and a run in with Kia Showroom staff we reached the outfall of Bypass

Shortly after entering we were greeted by a gentle climb up a water shoot...

...then down the first of the long and enduring 12ft RCP's to the first of the drop chambers

A little off shoot that led to another drop chamber. There were three of these if I remember correctly

The second water shoot, this being the larger just before the Macro infall.

This is the top. Left to sewer fresh right to Macro flood overflow

Macro flood overflow chamber. Macro drain is through the openings in the wall on the left, Bypass infall is on the right. This actually passes under Macro.

Up the left hand side after a short RCP section we were met with this.

To the left we discovered Pandora which we intend on visiting another time (yes the little hole in the floor)!

Further upstream was this which runs through Bradford Univercity campus. We decided against pursuing this further as the water quality, stench and funny looks from students took there toll

To the right of the junction we found a CSO

Will definitely be going back to visit this one sometime soon and spend a bit more time and to hopefully get to Pandora!!

    Thanks for looking...
