    Arrow Mapperley Tunnel - 4th & 12th April 2010

    Hi all,

Went to find the Mapperley tunnel earlier this month...we were looking in the wrong place for a while LOL! Anyway we finally found this monster tunnel and were suprised its so well hidden in the undergrowth with there being such a huge cutout approach.

I won't go into too much history as its been done a few times before but it was a line that ran from victoria station and runs underneath Mapperley hills. The tunnel is just over 1000yards in length but the furthest point you can get to is 545yards where the tunnel ends due to the huge rubbish pile thats been dumped down one of the airshafts. I have read that past this point the tunnel collapsed eventually leading to its closure.

Heres the pictures over the two days we were in the area:

Experimenting with light painting (first time we'd done this!):

    Exiting the tunnel! lol!

Hope these are good...next step is to learn how to light paint an area rather than drawing shapes.

Yeah, we'd seen pics of the rubbish pile before but its nothing like seeing it yourself...you shine torches into the darkness and slowly watch the shadow of the rubbish pile appear! Its insane!

Tunnel is very wet (we went after a couple of days sunshine) with water dripping from the brickwork. The tunnels drainage works ok but still a lot of mud from water dripping onto the tunnel floor from above!

Nice work mate. Reaching the pile of rubbish tipped down the second airshaft is almost a work of art isn't it lol. Did you have a wander around the former Gedling Colliery site too? There's a few bits and pieces to see around there, me and the OH went there last summer and followed the rail lines that are still there, (next to the park ).

there's quite a number of tunnels under Nottingham. We visited the Mansfield Road tunnel as well, from the former Victoria Station up to the end (under Clarendon College). At the end of there, you hit a brick wall. Can't remember whether it's another one or two tunnels on that same route, but one was blocked up when we had a look.

Yeah we explored the whole area and walked the track before it joins onto live lines near midland station! lol! We did stop at that point!

Isn't there a ladder on the tunnel wall leading up to manhole access? Saw a picture somewhere of it? Security have put us off getting in the mansfield road tunnel at the former station so any other way in would be a bonus for us!

don't reveal locations here though if you know them, pm me!

    Cheers, markus250

    Great stuff!

That rubbish pile is just disturbing, but epic too! Does the tunnel extend much beyond it? I'd probably be too concerned about loosing the inevitable UE Jenga game to try to climb around it though.

we did shine torches around the rubbish pile and its a huge mess back there! I wouldn't wanna risk climbing around it. I've heard the tunnel has collapsed not far past there though so no access any further. Rest of the tunnel was strengthened but its looking a bit shabby all over now.
