Arrow Gartloch Asylum - Glasgow - Sept 09

The City of Glasgow bought Gartloch estate in 1889 and built this asylum - the first patient arrived in 1896 and the last left in 1996 when the place finally was closed.

Visited with Dazzababes early one morning - excuse my terrible light painting.

This is situated on the grass outside the main building and claims there is a "time capsule" buried below.

The grand main building with the towers - I was struck by the awesome ornate detailings on all the buildings, even is such stages of advanced conversion these asylum building blew me away - I found a match to Denbigh in my mind.

A small example of some of the ornate detailing

again the main building from another angle

to the right is the main hall building, the two little square openings in the white bit is the old projector openings - there was a projector room "stuck" on the side of the building - to the left is one of the wards.

These are wards that are already converted

In the early 90's a series was made "Takin Over the Asylum" with Ken Stott and David Tennant - this was broadcast in 1994 - this pic shows the room that the Hospital Radio was set up and in fact a lot of the filming for the series.

This is the same room now - see the stickers on the door have survived

The wards are pretty much in a state - the floor here was totally impassable

This is the remains of an ornate fireplace in the dining hall which is below the main hall

And onto the main hall - with its stage situated at the side.

I literally stood in here for ages in awe at the grandiose spectacle in front of my eyes - it is jaw dropping.

and the lovelies whom dont take responsibility for the buildings any more
