While tidying up me hard drive I came across a folder from an old favorite; the pics are from 3 visits during last summer; a bit late in posting - but better late than never?
Oil seed extraction is one of the oldest industries in Hull, as early as 1740 they were squeezing linseed for paint, soap and cloth making. From oil seed extraction some of Hulls other industries grew such as paint, cattle feed and seed processing machinery.
The British Extracting Co silo and recieving house was built in 1919 by Gelder and Kitchen of Hull, it's 6 storeys high with an attic building
The silos are made from concrete, these were filled by screw fed conveyors on a pulley system. The seed was stored until needed for processing. The British Extraction Company was absorbed by BOCM and closed in the 1970's as a new process for extracting oils was invented which was over 90% efficient using solvents; which produced a higher yield, is quicker and less expensive making the old mechanical process obsolete.
The site was taken over by Reckitts - I haven't been able to find out what they did there; probably just used the warehouses?
The building was supposed to be demolished in 1996 but it's now listed
The area next to it is used as a reclaimation yard where they piled 30-40ft stacks of wood for recycling, last october some turd did the inevitable; the fire burned for almost a week. Luckily it didn't spread; the silos would have gone up like a rocket, the ground floor was full of fire fuel.
On with the pics; it's really 2 for the price of 1, warehouses and silo.
