Cannock Chase German War Cemetery - Feb 08 (pic heavy)

I visited my hometown and relatives today and as I was in the area, i finally had chance to visit Cannock Chase war cemetery.


The cemetery is for German soldiers that died in the first and second world war in the UK. The cemetery set in the heart of the chase and contains around 5000 graves of which 95 have unknown soldiers laid in them.
The cemetery had a strange atmosphere and was very calming and relaxing. Every grave is the same and is surrounded by patch of heather. No flowers from relatives are allowed inside the grounds.

Inside the entrance lies a statue of a soldier in need, as a reminder to those visiting the physical pain of war.

Your Picture No.11 is the grave stone to Hans-Wilhelm von Dresky, Captain, (Kapitanleutnant zur See) of the U-33, along with some of his crew.

she was on war patrol and was sunk on the 12 Feb, 1940 in the Firth of Clyde, in position 55.25N, 05.07W, by depth charges from the British minesweeper HMS Gleaner.
25 of the crew died, with 17 survivors.

Photo 16, is the gravestone of the crew of the German Zeppelin L.31 which crashed at potters Bar in WW.1

It is a surreal feeling when you visit these places.

When my platoon went to visit The Somme the immense size of the places got me

Always a moving and emotive subject and well covered by BB.
No matter whose side the men where on places like this should always be respected and preserved.
They may have been our enemy at the time they fell but you would hope the soldiers intered here recieved the full respect they deserved as you would hope our fallen fwould have recieved from the otherside.
They where all hero's who gave they all for there cause.

A slightly off topic question to do with German military that one of you may be able to answer. According to Last FM, Funker Vogt was the name of a rank in the German army as well as my choice of artist. I had struggled for a while to get a translation of the words "Funker Vogt" but the best sense I could get from Collins German Dictionary is that it had something to do with radios. What exactly DID a Funker Vogt do?

Perhaps Last FM is also wrong, I don't know. If someone out there knows more than me, please let me know. I do know that I keep meaning to fix my widget cos all my profile/music choice shows is how pissed off I was when I was unemployed and I've not had the thing running since I was on the dole. I need new pretty noises so it will be getting fixed.
