Upper Shibden Hall was first mentioned in 1277, and was owned by the de Shibden family.
The ruined Gatehouse

The Stocks family moved there in the 1800's and the house was one of many of the large country residences they owned. Michael Stocks rebuilt much of the house around 1800 and renamed it Catherine House. This tower is part of the later addition.

Michael Stocks rebuilt much of the house around 1800 and renamed it Catherine House. Although the roof is still intact, no floors remain in the tower.

It's a long time since anyone looked out of these windows.

Michael Stocks was the first elected Mayor of Halifax, although he turned down the role. He died here in 1872.
Empty doorway

The Stocks family were heavily involved in coal mining and later Brewing. The Shibden Head Brewery merged with Samuel Webster's in 1932.
The view from these French windows is really good. I apologise for the sky looking like the house is on Venus.

Last view of Upper Shibden Hall.

A nice place to visit.
