Arrow Cerebos Salt - Greatham. Jan09

Well, the last of my holiday explores and by far the coldest, on account of my being on the back of a bike. In January.
    NOT fun.
lol! worth it for the explore though, although i'm surprised this site hasn't been covered on here yet!!

This place was used to extract and process chemical grade salt from as early as 1894. After being bought by cerebos in the early 1900's it began to produce salt for human consumption. I'm guessing this is where atora and bisto come in. At it's peak, the site employed over 1'000 people
A branch of their Parent company, sharwoods took over the site in the 60's and began to produce curries for them. And you can still smell it on the conveyor belt... .

So, by the time it closed in 2002, it was producing and distributing a range of chutney's, sauces, soups and pastes.

This site has been quite comprehensivly covered on other sites so i didnt really cover it in all that much detail. I wanted to convey a sense of the sheer scale of tha place! The demo men have had a go, taking out alot af the tools, benches and cooking equipment so i think its days are numbered.
Have a lookie on another well known site for a few more reports if you want to

    Anyhow, on with the pics!

there used to be a few huge, open topped vats here.

So, in the dusky winter sunshine, this vast, out of the way site awaits it's fate....

An interesting explore... made even more interesting by the hoarde of firemen that turned up at around about the same time we did... Still not too sure what they were doing but we braved it anyway. Hoping they werent there for 'how to put out an empty, burning factory' training....

All in all, a good (If not cold) explore and the end of an epic few days, 5 explores in 7 days.
    phew, i'm knackered!!!

Good work, that looks an interesting and very big place. Love the wooden panelled enquiries help desk.

a bit of a return trip here today.. just to see whats going on and alot of it is stripped bare now. But managed to get a few pics of the little details still left...

ok, so maybe got a little carried away....
    lol!
Its a shame this site's days are numbered, its vast open spaces and total lack of charve damage make it quite rare i think. I love all the industrial stuff and the huge, emptyness, but chose for my last visit to concentrate on the little details!
I'm happy to have covered everything i want to, but i'd say for anyone wanting a look go now, before everything is gone and the place is flat!

Like the reception area and the admin building. Not much time left for the buildings by the looks of things. Cant understand why they are demoing stuff in a credit crunch!
