Arrow High Royds Chapel - Summer 08

This peaceful little chapel is off the main High Royds Asylum site along side a small road. The place is stripped bare but being in there gives you a sense of what it must have been like when the patients were being buried........grim

It is going to be turned into a permanent memorial to the poor people who died at High Royds Asylum and who were pretty much dumped in this small meadow.

    Only a few graves remain.

2858 pauper patients and 4 stillborn babies.

Below is just one of the patients interred at this site.

Hannah Wood aged 62, Admitted on the 11th January 1907. Mental State: She is very excited and noisy. She suffers from hallucinations and from delusions and is very exalted. She is restless and will not stay in bed at night. She is resistive when interfered with and smacked the night nurse in the face. She sings and gesticulates constantly. She has delusions that her brother Thomas McGuinness wants to supplant her in the Catholic throne of Ireland, that the attendant here is a Fenian and is a poisoner and that her food has been poisoned.
