Arrow Riverside Site (Country Grill?), Hull, Report 13/11/08

Riverside Site (Country Grill?), Hull, Report 13/11/08

I found this more substantial site a little while back and only recently considered doing it, I doubt I am the first person to get into this site post closure even though it seems to be relatively “intact” and mostly un-vandalised I am almost sure that the way in I had been watching had become easier over the weeks.

I will admit that this site is inhabited by some feral cats and that someone as either tried catching and/or caring for them on this site as there are boxes of empty cat food tins and kitty feed (Fresh/ new bags) in various sections of this building as well as the occasional net/ trap paraphernalia. Perhaps the Cat Keeper had been the one who had made it easier to get in than it was previously.

Due to its location, the building materials and the lack of care it as had over the last decade or so this building is rotting badly. Out of 4 sections of building I only got into 2.25 of them as decay/ rot and dumping/ collapses blocked or put me off the other sections.

I have no idea what this site was originally used for though it was either to do with whaling or a mill or sorts, but in its final days it was a car garage/ mechanics.

    The Target:

    (1)

Up the ladder the room still had features (fixed chairs/ table, radio..etc) but the floor was littered with straw (most of it fresh).

Across from the straw rooms you could see the fire escape for one of the larger buildings:

At the other side of the ground floor of one of the larger buildings I found a window right on the edge of the River. As I was taking a Photo of the River a Police Helicopter buzzed past the site (the streak in the following image is the Helicopter):

Walking out and up the fire escape I noticed the door to the next floor had been ripped off its hinges and blocked the way to the white door I had seen at the top. Going through the open doorway I decided to see what there was through my torch I could see abandoned cars! And a lot of bins (large commercial bins like you see at a pub/ café), After mooching about I realised that they had to have been up there for more than 10 years as no way remained to bring such big/ heavy things that high into the building existed anymore.

Only a large gap several floors above the bottom of the fire escape (I could only guess a crane was used to lift and push the cars through the gap where they where rolled into place further down the building.

Clambering up rusted ladders onto some service platforms above I noticed a number of fixtures still remained:

As I climbed some more rusted ladders I noticed that the floor was become worse:

Some company graffiti, the company is a steel based company that deals in platforms and rails. The company is listed on the net as still being around:

Around a large rusted “thing” (Mechanical system) I found a belt drive/ turbiney thing on the side of it:

Walking up a final set of stairs, this time wooden ones that moved under my weight:

I reached the top of the building and found that the connecting overhang between the two large buildings was a conveyor. I apologise that the image is blurred to hell but the ground here was wooden and rotten to the point of collapse! (you could feel it sagging in the pitch blackness of dark) so I wanted the picture to be done and I was gone from this spot.

I entered the ground floor of the other large building, intending on working up the building like before but soon realised this building (that from the first floor up this building was far more gone than the top of the other one) so I didn’t leave the ground floor. Across the ground floor there were more bins and debris that had fallen through the higher floors over the years:

Hearing a police car pull up outside the site I ducked back into the doorway where I took a shot of a section that I didn’t want to risk entering (collapses outside of it put me off) while I waited for them to leave:

After they left I crept around the badly damaged warehouse and found a sign, the name seems a little weird for a Mechanical/ Car company but whatever:

I decided to try my luck at the only other building on the site to check out and found it was in good enough condition to check out. Books and paper based items littered this section of the site:

Upstairs in a room I found some old stock/ deliveries, someone had already posed the label on one of the Crude Palm Kernel Oil bottles (a previous Explorer?), nearby there was an old Yashica Camera (Minister model?):

With it getting late in the morning and morning rush hour beginning I decided I would have to leave. Talk about Sods law with the traffic (when your not able to get out yet there will be no traffic, when you attempt to leave traffic will come by >.<).

It was a Conveyor system. I only took one shot of the spot (the only remotely safe way up to it was close to collapse, the other end wasn't reachable given the condition of the lower floors of the building:

Here is the photo I took as I said earlier, I apologise for the blurredness of it but the floor was creaking and warping under my feet as I took it

Nice work mate, those cars are Trabants I think, a nasty little car from Russia that were popular here for a while for some reason.

That site looks quite nice and the report is very good

Nice report and some really good pictures. Anywhere where there are abandoned cars is always interesting. Nice work mate.

Theres one in the imperial war museum in manchester, with a story of how you had to wait 6 years+ to get a car in the eastern block.

Excellent shots man! Thanks for posting. The simplicity of the original architecture makes it look very old.... late 1700s maybe?
Such a diversity of stuff in there.... Good work!
