    Default wentworth castle and gardens

    history :

Just two generations of one family were responsible for the Wentworth Castle estate for almost a century.
    Thomas Wentworth (d 1739)

Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford established a wider landscape of distinctive character. He created a noble seat at the centre of an ornamental landscape, with gardens, radial avenues and spreading woodlands. Scattered across the landscape were monuments, statuary, buildings and garden structures. However, what makes Stainborough unusual is that the ornamental and the productive are so closely interwoven. This combination of the useful and beautiful - a Great Avenue that concluded in arable fields, and vistas that made no attempt to hide productive fields – was an expression of power and prosperity.
    William Wentworth (d 1791)

Thomas' son, William, exerted a considerable impact on the park and gardens, over a long period of time. He made enormous changes to the parkland, especially the East Park. William replaced the formal octagon pond with rolling parkland and knolls with closely planted groups of oak and beech, and developed the Serpentine lake and Serpentine drive. Over time, William enhanced the beauty of the landscape with buildings: the palladian bridge over the Serpentine; the Rotunda; and a gothic umbrello amongst others. By the time of William's death, Wentworth Castle was accompanied with gardens and park of profound significance, reflections of which exist today.

Brought back some memories this has, stayed here for 3 nights in 1991 on a Womens writing course, was a great time and a beautiful place. On the top floor of the castle they had all the banners/colours from the miners strike, quite emotive....and then of course there's that wonderful glass house, I do hope they get it all restored, I would love to see it as it should be......Oh hell i'm going to have to find my pictures now.....
    Thanks for posting
