    Default Rievaulx Abbey, Near Helmsley

Rievaulx Abbey is located on the river Rye around 5 miles North of Helmsley, North Yorkshire. Founded in 1132 by Cistercian monks the abbey was only beaten in importance by Fountains Abbey. Its hard to imagine the scale of this place in its time unless you go to York Minster, and double it I reckon, its huge!

The monks diverted the river Rye 3 times in the building of this Abbey, they were also quite handy with iron making, and a clever person from Bradford University is quoted with saying that their techniques were so advanced that when it was dissolved in 1538 by Henry VIII it meant the industrial revolution would have to wait and other 2 centuries before it really took off, astonishing when you think about it, clever old monks!

In a similar fashion to my report on Kirkham Priory, once dissolved, all assets including the lead on the roofs was reclaimed, it would not have taken long to fall into rack and ruin

It is now managed by English Heritage, they have a cafe and a shop full of tourist overpriced guff, which is nice

I visited today with my daughter, who is turning out to be a right little explorer!

Now thats what I call an abbey:

I was lucky with the clouds, they were great!

Plenty more on me flickr site!

    Cheers

    Ian
