Default Jervaulx Abbey, East Witton, March 2011

I recently spent a weekend in North Yorkshire celebrating the father-in-law's retirement which gave me the opportunity to visit Jervaulx Abbey.

A whistle stop tour of 850 odd years of history...The abbey was founded in 1156 and disbanded during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Between 1805 and 1807 the ruins were excavated. The estate has had a number of owners over the years and was last purchased in 1971 by Major & Mrs W V Burdon. Today it is cared for by their son Ian and his wife Carol.

    The Dorter Subvault (monks' dormitory)

    This was the meat kitchen...

    Corridor porn, well, sort of...

An alter in the North Transept...

    The Monk's Infirmary...

    The Chapter House...

Church to the left, outer parlour to the right...

    Embalming slab...

    Thanks for looking

Nice, i do like this place, i like how it isnt all comericalised like ngligh heritage or national trust

East Witton is a gorgeus village too and walking to Middleham on a summers day is just pure lushness

Nice photos - Jervaulx is a superb wander.

Middleham castle nearby is also well worth a look, When its not blowing a gale, raining and you're in a cherrypicker at the top of one of the towers....

Thanks all. Yep, it's a really nice place to wander round. Would have liked to visit Middleham castle but we ran out of time. We stayed over in West Witton and ate at the Wensleydale Heifer - I had surf and turf which consisted of rib eye steak and lobster, tremendous!

I've fixed those 2 image tags now too, not sure what happened there
