after seeing posts from everyone to do with wistow i thought i would check it out myself, and parts that others havent covered. i found one way into the building but couldnt be bothered messing around with it so ill check that out on a later date!

Wistow is just one of 5 collierys in the Selby complex set up to mine the vast amounts of coal beneth it. Unfortunatly when UK coal took over, they decided to walk away from the harder to reach coal and left millions of tons of it. The complex involved 10 mine shafts and 124 miles of tunneling,until its closure in 2004.

wistow mine began producing coal in 1983. this was the first new British coalfield for half a century, the biggest pit in Europe. Tucked away on a quiet country road in Yorkshire, screened by hundreds of young trees, its winding gear hidden away in a brick duilding, it didn't look like other pits. But by the end of that decade and well into the 90s, Wistow was smashing production records and churing out just under 200,000 tonnes of coal a week.

Nice, i seen a picture of the Bonar - Long machine things on the bar at the top of this website and wondered where it was. I drive past some similar ones at Huntsman Tioxide and always wondered what they do
