    Default Whorlton castle . Whorlton . 19/02/11

Whorlton castle a grade 1 listed scheduled monument , nothing remains of the village after its destruction during the bubonic plague . In the early 12th century a motte and bailey castle stood here and the earthworks are still visible . Described in 1343 as in a ruinous condition the stone towerhouse and gatehouse were constructed by the meynells in the 14th century . All that remains now is the basement of the towerhouse and the 3 storey gatehouse . Down the road from the castle are the remains of the 12th century Holy Cross church complete with the 14th century tower.
