THURLIEGH AIRFIELD TOWER -BEDFORD
FEB-2011
The location as with most Airfield's has an interesting past.
So as I was headed over to Bedford at the weekend to meet up with Tstranger1066
decided to take another look.
War time History
The Airfield was opened in 1941 & originaly used by RAF 160 Sqdn, with with
B-24 Liberators
Then in 1942 it was handed over to the USAAF Bombardment Group (H)
Who flew the B-17 Flying Fortress bombers.
The carried out 342 Missions,between 1942- 1945
and lost a total of 171 Aircraft.
Post war history
In 1945 Much of the Airfield including the control tower was demolished to make way for the arrival of the Royal Aircraft Establishment
It became a site of major aircraft experimental development work within the UK.
Author Arthur Pearcy writes: "(RAE Bedford is ) the finest research and development establishment outside the U.S.A."
There is such a long list of Aircraft and equipment developed here I will post a link
which covers it in greater depth.

Will be focusing on the control tower, as covered the rest of the site in a previous Post.
Thanks for lookin in
