Arrow Saltergill residential school , Yarm . october 2010

Situated between Yarm and Worsall the school opened in 1971 and won an architecural award that year . The school closed in 2004 and the pupils relocated to King Edwin school in Norton . The place was pretty much intact when i visited , however since then i have heard everything of value has been stripped and the place trashed .

    The entrance looking out.

The main hall with all the granwood washed up at one end .

    The gym .

A sunken kitchen area , how many pupils faceplanted off those steps ?

    Soft under foot .

There was alot of old photo's lying around from when the school was refurbished in the 90's

A room where keys go to die .

    Hi guys,

New to this forum and this thread caught my attention.

I live a mere 2-3 minutes walk from the Saltergill School site. About 3 weeks ago I took the opportunity (on a cold, gloomy Saturday morning) to explore the Saltergill site. I ended up taking over 70 photo's of the school.

The school is actually a pleasure to walk around. It does indeed look rather creepy from the outside, but once your in you instantly become accustomed to the place (although I haven't explored it at night, lol). To be honest, I felt ashamed and quite emotional when I was exploring Saltergill. It really is a complete waste of a perfectly good building. The whole site has fell into complete ruin.

The Saltergill site WAS patrolled last year. I got caught wandering around the perimeter. However, the security guard was a nice old soul and he took me round the outside of the site so I could have a look. As of late, the site is no longer patrolled. Scrapmen have totally ravaged the place. It is practically an "open to all" site. I'd recommend exploring the site ASAP, because Saltergill is on borrowed time and I think demolition is imminent.

Just a quick warning. If you plan on exploring, be very careful in the boiler room (see image below) a fellow explorer claims to have been electrocuted in the boiler room (he touched a green fuse box).

Anyway, enjoy the following photos. These are the best of the bunch:

    The Caretakers house

    Entrance to Saltergill

Garages where teachers would keep their cars.

This building was the main entrance to the school

Closer look at main school entrance/reception

    Inside main reception area

    Small staff kitchen area

A dorm used by the pupils.

    The boiler room

One of the main areas of the school

This area sits adjacent to the assembly hall and canteen

    What was the kitchen

    The assembly hall/dining area

Overlooking the school. Below me was the science dept.

    Lockers

    Staircase leading downstairs

Kids artwork still remains on the walls. A sombre sight to be honest.

    Another dorm

A sentimental photo - notice the "twinkle twinkle little star" poster...

    The "Saltergill Bistro" HE/Cooking classroom

    HE/Cooking classroom

    One of two playgrounds

The gym - would be excellent for a free game of five a side footy!

Another shot of the school from the outside

    The music department

Rustic looking kitchen area next to the music classroom

    The science department

    Worksheets dating back to 2000.

Another external shot of the school

What was the playing field, now succumbing to Mother Nature.
