Arrow Patons Mill - Johnstone - Apr '09

It came to my attention the other day that I haven't actually written a report about this now sadly non existant place.

Built in 1782 as the Laigh Mill and is thought to be the first factory in the world to use automated machine production. Patons moved in in 1896 after their original factory was destroyed by fire. The mill produced thread and laces, a common industry in the Johnstone area.

The structure itself was a 6 storey building and was Grade A, proposals to turn it into a musem or flats were put forward but they sadly never came to fruition.

The mill was set on fire in May this year and then set on fire again a month later which completely destroyed everything resulting in the demoltion of what little remained. This along with Caldwells Papermill were my two favourite explores..both now big piles of rubble

Ive been driving past this place frequently the last couple of months - the tower is still standing and some of the outbuildings although they are severely trashed. Is such a shame. Nice report Pyro.

Cheers nij, it's the fact that they went back to finish the job which makes me think somebody put some money in their hand in order to do it...

I thought there was nothing left to salvage and that the entire site had been levelled, must be a sad sight but at least the tower is there as a reminder.

Looks like you were pretty thorough; we skipped the 30 foot well. ;-)

I think the stores were my favourite part, they had a different atmosphere to the rest of the mill – less vandalism, more abandonment. Let's hope we get in earlier with the "next Patons"…

Cheers Wolfism, aye we spent a good 3 or 4 hours dare I say it, milling around... The well was a bit of a surprise, being rather crapmed and dark down there it was only noticed before I took a pioneering plunge.

It was that lovely wee attic that was my favourite, pokey wee oddly shaped effort like something out of a childrens story.

The photos were all taken using a bridge/glorified point and shoot camera, rather dissapointed I never got the chance to go with an slr...
