Decided to breach my A.S.B.O. and head off to planet Thanet and take a look around some of the tunnels/air raid shelters.
The 1,124 yard long main Railway tunnel on the Broadstairs to Ramsgate Harbour line was opened in 1863 but was closed in 1926. In the summer of 1936 the narrow guage 'World Scenic Railway' was opened, starting in Heresdon road and connecting with the original tunnel. In 1939 planning for dug out air raid shelters leading to the tunnel was approved and at the outbreak of war the railway line was closed to the public and its use as a shelter began. The line wouldn't re-open again until 1949. It finaly closed for good in 1965. The tunnel is now 'sealed'.
