Castleton ROC Post - (Yorkshire Group) - December 2011
1991 Closure. Visited with Triplesix.
Status: Open.
I must admit, the post isnt as bad as i thought it was going to be. I last visited in 2009 and it was in a bad way. The hatch was detatched at the bottom of the shaft and the post was flooded to about 4".
When we visited this time - the hatch has been put back on, although not properly fastened. At least it keeps the water out.
The wind up here was absolutly crazy..

I am trying to find out who owns this. When i do, we will return with two padlocks and start our next restoration project.

Someone had used this place as a shitter when I went a few years back, shame as it could be restored that one.
Re: Castleton ROC Post - (Yorkshire Group) - December 2011
Its a good restoration candidate and fairly close by to Chop Gate too as that is our main base.
Re: Castleton ROC Post - (Yorkshire Group) - December 2011
Isn't this one just over from a pub too?
Re: Castleton ROC Post - (Yorkshire Group) - December 2011
Nope - its outside of the main village

If you sorted out the sump it would probably be ok just needs a tidy and some repairs. Though to be honest I can think of better posts you could do!

Like where?
I dont want one too far away from home - this can probably be reached withina 40min drive.
It would be still nice to fix it up though
Re: Castleton ROC Post - (Yorkshire Group) - December 2011
You need to fix up a cluster of posts and then connect them up on the comms. Our post is still connected up on the BT line! (connected via the underground network).
BT ran a check for me and said there would be no problem issuing a phone line again, providing I paid the line rental etc.
Re: Castleton ROC Post - (Yorkshire Group) - December 2011
I have recently contacted BT about getting a phone line re-installed but i was put through to India and told i had to pay £130 engineers fee, £30 connection charge and then a load of other costs - which i dont think is the case as i am sure Chop Gate will still be connected. I need to speak tp someone in the UK somehow..
I am also in the process of getting two Burndept 525 Radio's like were issued to the Master Posts. Also, i am getting a ROC Radio Base Station (as found in Group Controls), a Plessey PRD1100 Multiplex Base Station (as found in group controls) and aerials. Then that way, i could connect Castleton and Chop Gate together through the VHF High Band - if all goes according to plan - then this wouldnt run up any charges.
Perhaps if i got BT to re-connect the lines though, i could switch providers to get a cheaper tariff?
Lots to do this year!!!

I wonder what the landowner is responsible for on these? Like if someone falls in and hurts themselves, are they liable like on normal land or is it different because it's military? There's so many of these that are just deathtraps! Underground box full of water and rusty bunk beds...
