Visited many times with many people over the last two years. I think most people know a little about Box the largest of the remaining bathstome quarrys, which was originally mined after the excvation of Brunel's Box tunnel exposed masses of high quality stone under box hill, It was actually a series of intependent quarrys which joined up as the years went by leaving an extensive network bellow the hill. Box also borders onto Spring Quarry which was taken over by the military and was actually used as a lung or air filter to the government bunkers built in the adjoining Spring and Tunnel Quarry complex, The military bits of box are one of the most intersting parts but the most impressive is Cathedral a huge cavern which was quarried via vertical shaft between 1830 and 1850. The last part of Box to be worked was the northen clift works section which has the most mining equipment left in situ and an impressive collection of intact quarry cranes.
