The local. My Local. Barrow is the sort of place that will remain a butt of jokes within Bristol for a few generations to come yet. Ee’s a nutter. Ee awt a be in Barawl Gurnee. While Bristol had its own City Asylum over the other side of town its Barrow that is as well known throughout Bristol folklaw as is Cider is to guzzle. Opened in the late 1930's its first principle use was as a military hospital during the second world war.

In 1948 it reverted back to its intended original use and remained in use until in 2005 when it now famously was given the tag 'Dirtiest hospital in the country' tag after inspectors dammed the whole hospital. Two wards closed with immediate effect and with barely with anyone noticing the rest closed down for good in 2006.

The site typically holds many local folklaws. My brother once famously recollected playing a gig in a pub in the nearby local village of Barrow Gurney when two patients in there gowns walked into the pub, were served and quietly sat to watch the gig. Other tales of people escaping the secure unit exist but the ultimate tale told is that of a young nurse who took her life in the woods that surround the hospital. I recently had an email actually with news paper cuttings, so it turns out that it did happen. So much so that if you go looking in the right place you'll find a little memorial to the tree she hung herself from.

Barrow has pretty much had its day, gone of the hazzy days of getting access to buildings using the services tunnels or running around the woods at 1am with Rookinella & Silverstealth. Now its just a sorry state of which only 30% of the buildings remain.
