Flechers Mill opened in 1921 to make paper for cigarettes in response to concerns about French suppliers of such paper being cut off due to the hostilities of WW1 and its lingering effects. The site continued throughout its life to primarily focus on the production of cigarette paper only, other types of paper being produced within the company at their other plant in Stoneclough near Manchester.

The site stands on the same location as several mills that have gone before it, and on the roads in you can’t help to notice the sheer number of mills and their chimneys in the local area.

Robert Fletcher was originally a worker for a previous mill owner, Roger Crompton, and after working his way up through the company of Roger Compton finally took over the mill in its entirety on the death of Mr Compton. After his own death, Robert Fletcher was succeeded in the running of his mills by a number of his sons, up until dwindling sales and returns closed the mill in July 2001, 'almost overnight' as a number of sources report.

I won’t go into the history too much more than that, as it has been amply covered by a number of other reports, and I would just be reiterating most of what they said.

There are a few rotten wooden staircases in places, so be careful on those. One warning I would give anyone considering this site is that there is a 415v power cable arcing out somewhere in one of the lower rooms; you can hear it as you approach the door. As most of the floor, walkways, railing etc are all metal and interconnected; I would probably suggest avoiding that room as any one of the things you touch could be live. The door is marked so you know which room it is, but just in case that gets removed, keep your ears open on the bottom level as you go into rooms!

On with the pics:
