Prior to the establishment of the Duntocher and Dalmuir Water District Board in 1873, Clydebank's water supply was provided by Glasgow Corporation. In 1875, however, Cochno Loch was acquired by the Old Kilpatrick Parish Council to provide a supply of clean water to the district.

In 1887, in order to meet increased demand from local consumers, a dam was constructed across a ravine just below Cochno Loch to form the Edinbarnet or Jaw Reservoir and the Cochno Waterworks was created for filtration and treatment of this water supply.

The site operated as a water treatment works with several filtration tanks until it was closed in 1994/5 and its water supply was diverted to the nearby, and more modern, Burncrooks treatment plant.

As water use increased in the area, there was an attempt to re-activate the site made in December 1997. Work started Wednesday 10 December. The raw water inlet main was flushed, and then the sand filters were restarted on a trial basis. The water was highly coloured and soon the filters required backwashing. The only water available was the contaminated water from Burncrooks. It was decided on Friday 12 December that the use of the Cochno filters was not feasible. The site has remained derelict since.

The vast majority of this site is in surprisingly good condition, considering its former use and having been derelict for over a decade, however there is some small localised flooding.
