Site: Lanterns Court, Isle of Dogs, London.

Status: Under Construction

Project Description: In the Millennium Quarter of London’s Docklands, Lanterns Court lies just a few hundred yards from Canary Wharf. It marks the border between Victorian terraces to the south east and what was until recently an industrial zone beside the dock. Most of the buildings that make up this proposal adopt a monolithic language derived from the area’s industrial heritage and inspired by Corbusier’s Unité housing, where playful moves are made within a formal frame. The typological language is that of industrial architecture with a superstructure made of pre-cast concrete. Within it, individual apartments are placed on the superstructure to create a separate vocabulary of solid panels, balconies and glass doors. The orientation and location of each apartment determine the precise choice of apartment cladding. Lower down the buildings, white concrete with marble aggregate will provide a solid thermal mass. These infill panels overhang the frame to make clear their function is solely environmental. Living rooms feature floor-to-ceiling glass, while bedrooms have smaller windows to maintain thermal mass. As the apartments rise higher up the taller buildings, thermal mass is exchanged for higher-performing thermal-efficient glass that contains solar shading. Near their summits these buildings open up into sky gardens and projecting balconies. At one corner of the scheme stands a distinctive round tower. At only 18 storeys high it is modest compared to the 50 storey towers of nearby Canary Wharf, but provides a local landmark for the Millennium Quarter. It is designed to be clearly visible to people travelling around the low-lying hinterland beyond, helping them to locate the new amenities of the dockside.

Cheers, guys. Wish I'd packed my telephoto lens for this crane as Canary Wharf felt just out of reach.
