STORTHES HALL HOSPITAL 1904-1991

Founded as an Aslum and previously called the Storthes Hall Mental Hospital (1929-1938) Then the West Riding Mental Hospital (1939-1948) And finally, the Storthes Hall Hospital from (1949) until It's closure in (1991) Part of the site is now used as a Campus to house students from the University of Huddersfield. Planning permission was granted to turn the rest of the site into a retirement village. But as of yet, nothing has materialised. Huddersfield Town Football Club also use part of the grounds for training purposes.

Today's venture was personal and poignant as my Auntie worked here most of her life. And I still have vivid memories of my times here, and witnessing the antics of the patients. Some bizarre characters indeed. It must be 30yrs since I last set foot on these grounds.

As it was in It's hey day.

And now, with the solitary Admin Building amongst the rubble. The student campus at the top of the picture.

My intentions were to Photograph the Admin, and if I was lucky to gain access to the building then that would be a bonus. Sadly though, there is now 24/7 Security here in the form of a Caravan parked right outside the front door. So that put paid to any internals I'm afraid. The occupant was reasonable enough. But the rather large dog was adamant in barking It's authority, and hoping to sink It's teeth into some nice warm flesh. I was given 10 minutes shooting time :thumb

The approach.

Walking through the rubble where wards once stood. Sad really.

The Front. Difficult to get a full view as I was inside the fencing at the time :laugh

The badly tagged entrance. And a space where probably a nice plaque was housed.

The side view.

A couple of the lovely clock tower.

And the nice twin stacks.

A well underexposed arty shot.

And the beautiful surrounding countryside. With Emley Moor transmitter mast in the background.

Thanks for looking.

As I said, this was a nostalgia trip for me! So I won't be offended if mods deem this as crap and send it to the Mortuary so to speak :)
