Scruton Station was opened on the 6th March 1848 by the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway.
During the 1923 grouping of the railways it became part of LNER and then in the 1948 Nationalisation was under the control of the British Transport Commission.

It was closed on the 26th April 1954 and has remained empty ever since.

The 40 mile line that the station served ran from Northallerton on the East Coast Mainline to Garsdale on the Settle to Carlisle line.
the remaining 22 miles of this line is now in perservation and is operated by the Wensleydale Railway plc which run regular passenger services between Bedale and Redmire.
The intention is to replace the missing 18 miles between Redmire and Garsdale, as well as replace the curve to Northallerton Station.
