Overview from :secret Secret Scotland:
"The Black Dog Range is located on the east coast of Scotland, south of Balmedie. This complex has three live firing areas, and a dry training area which may be used for day or night training up to tactical level. Blanks and pyrotechnics will normally only be used during the day."
Site mainly used by army, navy and air force cadets from throughout region.
The firing points are a mixture of gravel base and rectangular dug outs.
At ground level in front of the targets are numbered signs so each :gun does not accidently shoot their neighbours target (it does happen!):

Blackdog has a concrete bunker where personnel can reposition and replace targets. Access into bunker:

Targets are raised by pulleys from below the rectangular hatches. The butts/backstop is the area behind the target into which the shot safely falls - in this case a sand dune:
