Explored here with Wurzel and Zombiesazza quite a lot to see dotted around but didn't manage to see it all as we were limited on time so I think a return visit could be in order. Lots of buildings some in very good condition window frames still there and doors etc. The control tower has still got wooden beams on ceiling and plasterboard too which you don't see very often also some of the print in the buildings still visable too. A lot of sheep poo too must be almost 2ft deep at the tower.
Building commenced on RAF Tain in mid 1940 but didn't become fully operational until July 1941 even then it was not complete as the runways hadn't been built these were not available until early 1942 It operated on a day to day basis as a stopping point for Spitfires from Peterhead to rearm and refuel while doing sector patrols. Officially opened in September 1941 under control of 14 group of fighter command and hosted several squadrons over the years with a variety of aircraft ranging from Hurricanes and Spitfires to the American B17 Flying Fortress and B24 Liberator . The airfield closed in early 1947 and part of it became the new practice bombing range for the RAF which still operates here on a regular basis.
Anyway enough of the history here is some of my pictures
