The site was originally called the North Wales Counties Lunatic Asylum and opened on the 14.11.1848.
By December 1927 the name was changed to North Wales Counties Mental Hospital, and by 1947 the site was known by the name North Wales Hospital for Nervous and Mental Disorders. From about 1981 the name changed again to the North Wales Hospital, which remained until its closure in 1995.
The asylum is a Corridor Plan (http://studymore.org.uk/asyarc.htm#Corridor) type.
The buildings are now in a very poor state (with some even having been demolished,) a very dilapidated roof, has lead to collapsed floors being the norm throughout the buildings. This combined with usual damage caused by copper thieves and chavs, means there isn't a great deal left to see, but the stunning architecture makes a visit well worthwhile.
