The hospital has existed on site since 1829. Initially it was a mental health unit, called the 'Lunatic Asylum Building'. The building's name continually changed during the 19th and early 20th centuries from Cheshire Lunatic Asylum, to Chester County Lunatic Asylum, County Mental Hospital, Upton Mental Hospital, Deva Hospital and finally West Cheshire Hospital.
As treatment for mental illness changed from imprisonment to medication and therapy, the hospital became less busy. Eventually, less than 5% of patients were forced to stay in hospital.
Only three wards remain, along with a couple of brick corridors, water tower and the boiler rooms. Asbestos removal is nearly completed on the site, so these building probably won’t be around to too much longer. Get there while you can :thumb

This is due to a development of houses and apartments on part of the site, and the rest being demolished to remove the expense of council tax from the NHS budget.

Good to see a few bits, thought it was nearly gone :(

Any photoes of how much is left?

All the Admin block has gone along with The Dining Hall, Kitchens, Supplies, Phramcy, there on the Engineering blocks now,
the only major bits left standing are Daresbury & Dunham & Hale (near Kitchens), Ashby & Irby (the wards furthest away near fields at back),
I give it 3/4 month's till it's all gone, I've hundreds of pics of Phase 3 Demolition a few here I'll post A Demolition thread soon a few to start with
A few to put you all in the picture....

This used to be the Shop behind that the Dining room behind that the kitchens (Gone Now) you can now see straight through to Daresbury & Dunham & Hale.

The Admin block was here behind that Stores & Supplies all gone you can see the Pharmacy building (I think) this has now gone and the ground levelled.
