Built in 1939 mostly by hand by over 3000 men mostly Irish at a cost of £3.5million, Edingham Munitions factory produced Cordite and nitroglycerine for the war effort. After the war the site was used as a store for such things as floating mines. The land was eventually sold back to the local farmers in 1960.
Some of the site has been granted national monument status – apart from sheep and cow pens now some of the buildings are used for army and police training.
A splendid little explore on a frosty morning with shades of Ardeer about it in a smaller scale.
