and for my last report from this weekend we have a control tower near the village of wigsley.

this info from t'internet:

Opened: 8 Feb 1942

Closed: 1 Jul 1958

Units based here:

455 Sqn RAAF :: 8 Feb 1942 - 26 Apr 1942

50 Conversion Flight :: 5 Aug 1942 - 7 Oct 1942
combined with 83 Conversion flight in
1654 HCU :: 7 Oct 1942 - 1 Sep 1945

28 Aircrew Holding Unit :: 20 Sep 1945 - 1946

Although not strictly a Lincolnshire RAF station, RAF Wigsley sneaks in in the south-east corner of the domestic site. However more importantly it was a satellite of RAF Swinderby within Bomber Command 51 Base from 15 Mar 1943 and then 75 Base from Nov 1944.

With the departure of 455 Sqn RAAF to Coastal Command in Apr 1942, Wigsley's operational flying days had already ended and it was dedicated to operational training.

After 28 Aircrew Holding unit formed and disbanded here the airfield was retained until closure in 1958 for flying training from RAF Swinderby.

A latter-day use of the airfield was by Mr Ray Fixter in 1969 who made an attempt to fly the worlds lightest aircraft, the 'Knome' in 1969.

lol yes was a good weekend and am still shattered now.

just for fun on the way home I had car problems , pulled onto the hard shoulder, thought oh great gonna have to call the AA and wait up to 45/60 mins for them to arrive .... and then realized with horror that my phone battery was 100% flat :mad:

thankfully I managed to get home and with further luck my usual garage was able to get me in today and £210 later I have a new radiator :( :mad:

still good weekend and lovely guesthouse I will stay at next time I head there

yeah defo a shame - weird how sometimes something so small and in such a state can still give one a nice sense of pleasure mooching round it and shooting it - I did enjoy this one :)

Nicely done - I think the graffiti enhances the place. I like seeing places that are tiny but are still a good moochabout. :thumb
