Cherry Knowles Hospital ( Sunderland Borough Asylum) opened its doors in 1895 being the fifth of Mr G.T.Hines architectural achievements in this field. The famed brown glazed tiles Mr Hine used are nicely evident extensively here. The buildings were designed in a compact arrow plan.
The site was closed in 1998 and extensive visits from many assorted individuals has led to the demise of this once great building which now sits majestically behind its steel apron slowly decaying.
