After war was declared in September 1939, the first wave of evacuation that had been planned for many months was put into effect, and children in the major cities of Britain were lined up in their school playgrounds, and walked down to the railway stations and taken to the relative safety of the countryside. In 1940, this school in Linton, North Yorkshire was built, and began receiving children from Bradford, evacuated in the second wave. Today it lies ruined.

As it is primarily a wooden construction, then the weather and those nasty Caravan Utilising Nomadic Travellers have done there worst, and it is open to the elements.

This place is quite odd, and it is clear that the site is inhabited;a number of cars and a caravan are parked up near the main entrance.

Many of the buildings are pretty similar in construction, although a frankly rushed visit meant that overall site documentation was poor.

After the war, the school remained open until the 19980's. It became a Special Residential School, taking pupils from Bradford at times when they couldn't be accommodated at home for various reasons.

On the site, amongst the neatly mowed lawns are the remains of tennis courts, and a filled in open air swimming pool. Sadly no shots readers. Here's an alternative one of the outside of a building.

I wish I had spent longer here. This turned out to be a place where as you leave you are very proud of yourself for doing a very thorough job of carefully documenting a fascinating site, and upon return home the job is shoddy.

When you read the reports of children who stayed here, it is good that many have very positive memories, and the wonderful Yorkshire countryside must have been a silver lining in some very difficult times.
