The Markeaton Interceptor Storm Relief Culvert, also known as 'Captain Birdseye's Flo Selecta' is a bypass for the Markeaton Brook which naturally cuts through Derby City Centre.

The culvert was built in 1938 in response to 1932 Derby flood, the worst in the Derby's history and is 12ft brick and concrete 'horse shoe' shaped with several multi storey chambers along its length - basically I can walk through it without crouching, which is always nice.

At each end is concrete modernisations, the most recent being in 2006 when the two infall's were significantly remodelled to handle the increased risk of flooding. All in all pretty spiffing.

Is it me, or is that huge infall grille made from old rails?

Well observed! Indeed they are, Workington made :)
