Decided this evening to have a trip to Haslingden to look for some culverts.

The map said that there was 2 on Swinnel Brook.

I found Number 1 culvert not long after wading upriver.

This one was around 196Metres long

A mixture of designs (stone arch and stone with concrete roof).

I've named this first culvert "Twistier Blunders" :)

Around 50Metres upstream was another Culvert.

This took the Brook under St Crispin Way.

This Culvert was around 228Metres long.

A lovely stone arch section, then a straight backbreaking concrete part.

I ended up in a locked yard of a chemical place, so had to go back through to get out of the Brook :D

if this is to be named, i'll call it "Crispy Twains".

Third from last picture is awesome, and the darker version is quite atmospheric :-)

Culverts and concrete drains are one of the few things that don't seem to exist in Hull we have drains but almost all of them are very tiny (Mouse sized) or open aired (like man made tributaries). I guess its because of the proximitry to rivers and estuary as well as the fact the whole area was a swamp until a couple of hundred of years ago. I could see concrete drains and such being a pain in the ass to deal with logistically considering how much ground water there is here.

EDIT: Ironically I just read the local news rag's site and found out that Beverly Road as flooded because of a burst water main. Its 2 years to the day since the big floods that last swept Hull :-P

Thanks Ice :)

on that pic, it looks quite large, but it was only around 5foot in height (not good if you're tall)

somebody on 28 said in one of my reports..
"would love to do something like this, but there's nowhere in Hull :( "

i looked on the map thinking there must be something he's missed and i remember i went a good way following rivers before i found anything that resembled a culvert and that wasn't very long (125ish metres if i remember right).
forgot the name of the area i eventually found one.

Interesting stuffage on Hull being a swamp once..
never knew that, think i'll put it in the "What have you learned today" thread :smclap

as strange as it seems.. i haven't seen one rat in any of the ones i've done yet.
not even a footprint :(

we either don't have any in the valley, or they're scared of "The Chew" :coffee

That was me I think!

Spent AGES on flash earth and google maps, and 'where is the path' showing 50's Ordnance Survey maps etc, SEARCHING for culverts or anything, like, and the only walkable one I've found so far is this one here..

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.751894&lon=-0.333802&z=19.1&r=0&src=msl

It's very short, you can immediately see daylight through the other end..

I may have to start looking further afield...

i remember you asking, then someone else did too :D

how far are you from Bransholme and Kingswood?

this could be ok, both 200+ish metres :thumb

they could be concrete ones looking at what's around though.

http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm?lat=53.79305396453867&lon=-0.3465336470880384&gz=17&oz=9&gt=1

i follow small brooks and streams rather than big rivers :)

this could be interesting...

can't decide if it's all one stream or where it disappears on the left next to Marfleet Lane, will it come out next to the school or at the side of Poorhouse Lane?

Fantastic stuff, really like pic 5 in the second set, a nice mixture of stone, brick and concrete all in one!
what was the inspiration for the naming of them?:LOL

Thanks Kev :)

the names are anagrams of the places they're at/under

Culvert 1 (Twistier Blunders) is an anagram of "Under Birtwistles" (the mill it went under).

Culvert 2 (Crispy Twains) is an anagram of "St Crispin Way" (the road it went under).

Chewy, any good ones round Leeds or a nOOb like me?

I also have a morbid fear of rats.

you can have a look at this (http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm?lat=53.811292852321635&lon=-1.5394090429046128&gz=16&oz=10&gt=1) Elv on Sheepscar Beck...

measures around 464metres in a straight line, but could be looking at 500metres plus with the twists and turns :thumb

not sure how high it is inside or even been done yet, just had a quick look on the map and found the river/brook and followed it until it disappeared :D

there's 2 smaller ones if you follow the river down (one is 164ish metres and the other 120ish metres).

Edit.. there's loads on that brook..
follow it down to Hope Road, it looks to go under New York Road , but god knows where the other end is :jester

here's a great vid by Phill.D of some Leeds culverts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cecu5kyUf2M
this could be the same brook and could lead into the Aire .

Another Edit.. i'm certain it's the same one now..

Sheepscar, Hope, Mabgate, Bus Station and East Street are all mentioned :)
