Did these with a mate a week or two ago.

The entrance is on the dunes on the beach at brancaster. Apparently there's several of these tunnels all over the beach but i have yet to find another even though a friend of mine maintains theres another one further down.

Aaaaanyhoo...
The access into the tunnels doesnt look too bad from outside but you have to crawl on your belly with your face in the sand and squeeze through betwen all the sand that's been blown in and the top of the tunnels. Sandy pants... Brill! :(

Once properly inside things are alot easier, although you need torches as the tunnel goes down about 20-30 ft and theres no light at all.
Also, look out for rubbish and general nastiness... (you know what i mean...)

More corridors sprouting off & strange little 'cubicles'

Shadowz. And thankfully no Cliff Richard in sight.

They remind me of the ones at spurn point, are they ww2 ?

Yeah pretty sure they are. The structures and concrete look about the same ages & condition as the pillboxes around there.

If they arent WW2 then i have no clue as to what they are.

heres a little drawing i made of the layout of the place. I think the end (which is bricked up on the inside) comes out under the golf course and once had another entrance there... OR... there's more tunnelage! It sounds hollow behind there!
Also, it's not very accurate - there may be a few corridoors and rooms i missed off but it's basically the same.

I aint no artist, but you'll get the general jist.

A bit of thread necromancy..

These are the magazines and rest areas for the Brancaster Coast Defence Battery, there's an NHER entry (link (http://www.heritage.norfolk.gov.uk/SingleResult.aspx?uid=MNF31113)):

A World War two coastal battery consisting of two brick and concrete roofed gun houses connected by a semi underground complex of magazines and shelters can be seen on aerial photographs of this area and partly remain within and exposed from the sand dunes. This is the best preserved battery in Norfolk. It has been attacked by coastal erosion.

The phrase, "the best preserved battery in Norfolk", is a little over-used on NHE as it's applied to several different batterys. The best preserved I have found is King's Lynn CDB. Probably because it was never fully operational and the sea wall was superseded so erosion isn't an issue.

Looking for something else I've found a copy I made of a related NRO record abstract (C/P11/11). It appears the remaining structures of the battery were retained at the request of Brancaster Golf Club as it was helping to stablise the shore.

ooooooooooh not been here for about 34 years :o Went with a metal detecting club here all those years ago. did have a look at the pillboxes, but didn't know these were here then. :( Did you find any shell cases? we found loads of them, all different sizes. :)

Cheers,

:) Sal
