Some years ago I saw pictures of the decaying skeleton of the old Lincoln Park Roller Coaster, THE COMET. It was love at first site. It was only appropriate that it became a mandatory stop on the Stooges recent 5 state 800 mile UE road trip.

Lincoln Park(Dartmouth Mass) was a popular destination for many years, offering entertainment and rides. Its golden age was from just after WWII to the early 1980’s. When built in 1947 the Comet was one of the largest wooden roller coasters in the North East with a track length of 3000 feet and car speeds just below 60 miles an hour.

Management and people’s interest began to change and In the 80’s the park began to decline. In 1986 a man was dragged to his death on the Comet. The following year after repairs that where supposed to make the coaster safe there was another accident and train of coaster cars jackknifed. That accident widely publicized. Although there were no deaths this time the Comet never ran again. Shortly after that the park closed never to reopen.

Despite being made of wood and not cared for in decades much of it still stands.

The old bench near the coaster. Some who are so inclined say you can feel a certain strange energy if you sit there awhile.
