Kilnsea Sound Mirror is located near Kilnsea, Yorkshire. It is the only listed ‘building’ in Kilnsea.

In World War I the Germans used Zeppelins to make bombing raids on eastern England. In order to have some warning of their approach, acoustic sound mirrors made of concrete were erected at various points along the coast. The Kilnsea sound mirror was probably built in 1916/17. It is in the shape of a half-hexagon, with an inner concave circular disc to amplify sound. It is 16 feet high and 17 feet wide. In front of the concrete disc is a plinth, with a pipe on which would have been mounted a trumpet-shaped 'collector head' which was a basic microphone.

A great site, seen it many times.

Spurn Point and the surrounding area are full of military things. Just up the road you have Holmpton R3 Rotor, Bempton R1 Rotor, Sunk Island, Out Newton, The Happidrome and the Rowlston Firing Range.

All well worth a visit but the sound mirror is unique :thumb

I haven't been to the Rotors, although it may be on the cards sometime soon, been to Out Newton Roc. Not visited Sunk Island or ever heard of the Happidrome or the firing range, sounds cool:thumb

I want to FSM Out Newton ROC out of curiosity basically :-)

The ROTOR Stations are well worth a visit, espcially Holmpton which is in fantastic condition. If you start at Bempton (mask needed) and work you way down through Brid and take the road to Withernsea you go right past Rowlston Ranges. Then carry on down to Holmpton and finally get chased away from the Happidrome by the mad farmer who lives next door LOL

Sounds like a plan:thumb Just as long as the farmer doesn't have a gun!
