Hartwood was built in 1890 and the official opening was on 20 May 1895 – accommodating initially 500 patients in 3 female and 3 male wards with a female and male official block, kitchen and dining hall.
Hospital buildings, including private branch railway, electric lighting, medical superintendent’s house and 27 cottage-type houses for staff, it was self sustaining, with its own farm, gardens, reservoir and graveyard.

Hartwood closed under the direction of the Lanarkshire Health Board in 1998. A serious fire in 2004 destroyed the building. It stands a derelict ruin now.

I was fortunate enough to have seen this place before it shut and was inside it in 1995 - it was quite stunning then - this was my first visit since then and now it is a sad shell.
Due to circumstances I literally only had about 15 minutes inside so my pics were hurried. Heres what I got

the imposing twin clock towers

you can just see some of the remaining glass roof - this corridor ran along the back and connected the two towers
