Check this Pillbox, the coolest we have ever found, nice flint stone work in the render. It is near Boston Lincolnshire.

Heres a couple of local pill boxes from our area. First one on the beach is at East Runton near Cromer and has fallen down the cliff as they have arroded back. The second batch of photos is of a box we found hidden up in a field at RAF Oulton Norfolk, this one has some natty decoration, I think it was positioned at one of the entrances to the old airbase.

Here is a trip I managed to make today.

'A stretch along the river Ouse is known as Pill Box Alley due to the large number erected around this point of the river, about 36 in total, many of which are still standing.'

Just abit of history for the site!

' Close to the mouth of the Cuckmere River are concrete constructions which were built during the Second World War. A system of lights mimicked Newhaven harbour at night which, it was hoped, would attract enemy aircraft away from the real harbour and so bomb the haven instead. Other constructions built there were tank traps and block houses 'pill-boxes' used as gun emplacementsand look-out posts often manned by the Home Guard (Dad's Army). '

Silent Sentinal's of Widemouth Bay, Cornwall.

People mingle amongst these Tank Traps that are scattered amongst the dunes at Widemouth Bay, but how many stop and wonder what they are or were for:confused:

They stand silent! Some still on duty ready to stop an invading army that will never come! And as time marches on they will fade into the sandy dune's to be covered for ever:(

This was all I could find with google - Rye Harbour was within the general area that would have been visited by 7 Division of the German 16th Army had Operation Sealion been launched.

The pillboxes at Rye are unique; mostly shell-proof (1m thick concrete walls and roof).

Found this while hunting for the Auxilary Operations base in Aldroughty Wood Elgin seems to have been a deep bunker I believe it may have been a ammo store or something as tanks were nearby and in these woods often dont think its the Aux ops base but still a find. Has had wooden posts at the side and a corrigated Iron roof at one point.

I stopped off at this little pill box on my way to collect my kids for the weekend.

It's located at the Great Yarmouth end of the A47 and looks to be in very good condition considering it's location. There's another across the other side of the road, but that wasn't too easy to get to, plus it was being guarded by sheep!!!

Pillboxes, Shoreham Airport - Aug 09

Opened in 1911, Shoreham Airport (civilian) was requisitioned by the Air Ministry in June 1940 for use as an advanced airfield in the Tangmere Sector.

The airfield was defended by various pillboxes around its perimeter, and at least one Pickett-Hamilton Fort.

Please beware if you go and view these yourself, junkies use the pillboxes. I see several needles inside one of them.

Sorry there are so many images.

Royal Military Canal, Rye to Appledore - Aug 09

The Royal Military Canal is a canal running 28 miles between Seabrook near Folkstone and Cliff End near Hastings, following the old cliff line bordering Romney Marsh.

During the early stages of World War II, when German invasion was looking likely, the canal was fortified with concrete pillboxes.

The concrete block i believe was some sort of anti tank block that has slipped down the side of the cliff. The Fire Trench was full of soil and i didnt fancy squeezing in only to be greeted by the usual culprits.

Rummaging through some old photos the other day (Nothing better to do) and came across some real early UE, I did back in the 1970's:w00t

I was only 14 then, and went fishing with me dad, on the then abandoned Kennet & Avon Canal, near Aldermarston, Berks.
I was more interested in the bunkers than the fishing:D

I wonder if the sign and the air raid shelters are still about:confused:

Apologies for pic quality but this was real film, in them days, on some old Kodak camera:thumb

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii38/tankman_2008/Scrap%20Album/GWRShelters.jpg

The Air Raid Shelters, were in a small wood between a railway track and the canal....Time has fuddled my brain as to the exact spot:panic

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii38/tankman_2008/Scrap%20Album/GWRShelterSign.jpg

The Sign reads: This Land Is Out of Bounds to GWR Staff. Access to Shelters Only.

And this one taken in Cherbourg Harbour taken around the 1980's.

Just as daylight was fading,Not allowed to dig it out as its part of a nature reserve and they are very protective of it.There was a big write up in the local papers years ago about the military damaging the area and the bunkers. The whole area has been used as a training ground, bombing range and also had two rifle ranges one of which is still in use.The forestry commision has taken on the job of trying to preserve the nearby Innes Links Emergency Battery and have carried out an archealogical survey of the area.
They have also buried one of the pillboxes and it is now in use as a bat shelter.

.. Probably really sore, BB. :P

The small observation post is situated on the S side of a sharp bend in the A942 Great Eastern Road at the W end of Portessie. The structure is at the bottom of a steep slope.
The walls are of shuttered concrete and two small loopholes are set high in the wall. Above the roof is a section of concrete reinforcing. The entrance is at the E end of the building and the interior has either been cut into the natural rock or the building has utilised an existing natural cave. The outer wall has been fixed to the rock using cement and no internal features were noted.
The whole structure has been painted white, but whether this is to provide better visibility at night on a sharp bend in the road or for some other purpose is not known.
Visited by RCAHMS (DE), 29 August 2007

http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=RCAHMS&id=247537

It was painted white because some teenagers graffitied the outside and a couple of locals found it an eye sore so they painted over the bright red writing (I couldn't tell you what it said now) with white paint... Should have used grey imo (I used to live here.. this pillbox was a 'if you're local and know about it' thing).

Flame Barrage Oil Pump House, Camber

These two structures are situated either side of Broomhill Farm's gate and make up what was the pump house for the FBL 'Flame Barrage, Land'

Abit of history :-

By early 1941 a flame barrage technique was developed. Rather than attempting to ignite oil floating on water, nozzles were placed above high-water mark with pumps producing sufficient pressure to spray fuel which produced a roaring wall of flame over, rather than on, the water.Such installations consumed considerable resources and although this weapon was impressive, its network of pipes was vulnerable to pre-landing bombardment; General Brooke did not consider it effective.

Here are the few shots I managed to get of the pump house's.

The train we almost got squished by? The reason we never found it, TS was because it's on a train track.
Wurzel and I found the first one and decided the other side of a massive bridge should have one so off we went looking and never found one but we did find a train coming toward us..
"Sarah, train!"
"What?"
"TRAIN!"
"Oh... Shit!"

*Wurzel and Sazza jump into a pile of gorse to avoid train*
*Train goes past quite fast a few feet away*
*Wurzel and Sazza run across massive bridge on full stomachs and get cramp*
*Wurzel and Sazza hear Sirens and look very worried until they realise they are both tits as it's an ambulance*

I believe my famous words in Wurzels car were "We should be fine, there shouldn't be any trains coming"

I think the ones they put in the road were the round cone shaped ones with the domed bottoms so they could be moved on and off the road by sticking a metal rod in the end and rolling them away. like these ones at Sutton, near Dover.

Four slits on either side of the wall. Both are located within the church grounds to the rear.

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii38/tankman_2008/Milton%20Keynes%20Unseen/100_2496.jpg

The rear of the pillbox has been turned into a Grotto with a statue of Jesus inside!

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii38/tankman_2008/Milton%20Keynes%20Unseen/100_2490.jpg

At the other end of the wall is the second pillbox built into the wall, having four slits bricked up! Thoughtlessly covered up by a bus stop:(
Entrance is again through the Church garden.

Hurstpierpoint Auxiliary unit Lookout, Sussex, July 2010

This is the lookout which was connected to the main hideout (collapsed) via a telephone wire. It was just big enough for one man to fit inside and relay enemy movements to the operational base.
I was well chuffed to find this as the lookouts are harder to find than the hideouts

Here are a few pill boxes located in the Essex area.
First up is the mother of all pill boxes it`s a twin, the only one in the UK as far as I know.

Then on to Bradwell Bay along the coast, these pill boxes pass right through the earthen sea defences.

On Summerhouse Hill just off Newton Road between Stoford and Yeovil in Somerset sits this lonely thick-walled Type 24. It’s clearly visible on GE and overlooks the southern approach to Yeovil. Main line of sight is towards Two Tower Lane which runs left to right across it’s position some several hundred yards away.

http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab132/Munch099/Summerhouse%20Hill%20Pillbox/Summerhouse%20Hill%20Pillbox%20640/SummerhousehillPB.jpg

On the other side of Two Tower Lane is the Barwick House Estate which contains four folly’s including ‘Jack the treacle eater’. Barwick estate was used as an embarkation camp for some 5000 American troops prior to D-Day. Sadly, their destination was Omaha beach.

The view is commanding with Rampisham Down Transmitting station in direct line of sight some 10 miles distant. From the information I have, its only purpose was to cover the southern approach.

The five embrasures are approx 12” x 12” and have steel plates embedded in the concrete. Strangely, there are no rear embrasures. The pillbox is in good general condition inside (albeit chavved) although there are a number of external surface cracks. Clear evidence of wood shuttering inside.

It has it’s back to the site of the now overbuilt Yeovil Town railway station a mile away and faces (slightly to the left but not visible) Yeovil Junction station.

Well worth reading this link I found. Although it merely mentions this pillbox, the young boy’s account of the war years in Yeovil is touching and insightful.

Built in 1943 ready for D-Day, Torquay harbour's concrete ramps were two of 68 ramps or "hards" built along the south coast for loading LCTs (Landing Craft Troop) and LSTs (Landing Ship Tank); Torquay's was a 4-berth LCT hard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Torquay#1943

Early in 1944 a coast ban, from The Wash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wash) to Cornwall, had come into force and visitors were only allowed in if possessing appropriate permits: this was to ensure absolute security surrounded the preparation of Operation Overlord (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Overlord) and the D-Day landings. Torquay played a vital role in the landings, more than 23,000 men of the American 4th Infantry Division departed from Torquay for Utah Beach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_Beach) during Overlord.Protected structures, probably never to be used again except by the odd seagull...

Just around the corner from the harbour at Peaked Tor Cove is the WW2 Mine Watchers post.
Sitting above the beach, it's where mines protecting Torquay Harbour would have been remotely detonated in the event of invasion. Sealed recently with the access points made smaller by the countryside trust, it's now protected, providing a secure roost for a local colony of Horseshoe Bats...

In May 1939 the ARP Department advised local authorities that they may spend £50 for protected shelters rising to £75 for larger examples. Advice was given for small flat-roofed, above ground structures but no national standard was provided and local patterns were used. ARP Wardens' posts were a vital part of Civil defence co-ordination and from them communications would have been maintained with other posts to enable early warning of raids to be given, and emergency assistance rendered in the case of attack to injured or trapped victims in nearby streets.
This was one of 12 new posts in Dover approved in October 1939 and completed in June 1940 and is one of only two ARP posts which now survive in Dover.
Grade 2 listed in March 2008.

Found this little gem in a field overlooking the back of Weybourne, its interesting as the gun positions face inland rather than out to sea like all the others in the area.
It is completely overgrown but in great condition internally, it has an entrance like I have not seen before and is split into two halfs each containing one revett and gun mount. The actual gun mounts are still in position, can anyone tell me what gun was mounted on these? I can find no info on these type of mounts at all.

Does the entrance have the sea behind it? Its facing in land to give covering fire across open ground in case of paratroope landings. I would not be surprised if there are other pillboxes within close proximity facing inland as well. Are there any shallows around the pillbox that resemble slit trenchs?

The gun mount was for a Vickers machine gun:thumb

Interesting this one:thumb I was down at Weybourne during summer last year, and came across the same site, and wondered that as well! It looks like the base remains of a small lookout/gunnery range finder?

The DOB database has listed numerous pillboxes & defences along this section especially around the Weybourne beach entrance, with some underground magazines and 18 pounder gun emplacements.

Near Weybourne Mill along the single track road is a single pillbox in the hedgerow also, that is bricked up. And somewhere along the beach are the remains of scaffolding from the beach defences, that are still sticking up!

Hope to be back down that way in the summer, when I spend some time helping out on the North Norfolk Railway.

A local site to me.

Nothing so trivial as a machine gun post, this is King's Lynn Coastal Defence Battery. It was (briefly) equipped with two 6" guns, but may never have been operational before the guns were removed to another battery in Northumberland.

The tall building is the battery observation post, other structures are the magazines, the gunhouses, crew shelters, and in the distance on your last shot a unique close defence pillbox/bunker (a modification to a standard drawing number).

I have some old shots, once I get them updated I'll add a report.

During WWII Weybourne Mill provided an excellent lookout position, and was used as part of the Anti- Invasion defences in this part of Norfolk. (Today the Mill has been restored and is now a private house).
It was flanked by the pillbox below some 100yards from the mill that protected a small lane leading up from the cliffs, along with those already mentioned by Simonix etc.

It is across the way from a chain radar station in a seperate field. I need to know what it is so I can include it in my complete thread about the Radar station.

The device in the embrasure is a Turnbull mount. The frame part in your pictures could be fitted with different gun cradles for among others Bren LMG and Vickers MMG. :smile

I can't confirm it's an Oerlikon for definite, I had the wrong lens for a tighter shot and I didn't think the farmer would appreciate a trek across his freshly germinated spring barley..

It doesn't feature on NHER, but the DOB entry summarises it as, "1979/__/__ Ordinary concrete type 22 pillbox distinguished by steel cone mounting for 20mm LMG fixed to roof"

Ok, thanks. A friend of mine is investigating similar 22's at Acklington and a debate has started re gun type. We believe it's certainly 20mm and could be intended for several different guns including the Oerlikon hence my query re confirmation. The issue is whether they were ever actually operational due to availability. Lewis guns were often jerry rigged to these platforms we believe, and Brens on AA tripods. We'll be checking this out so if there's anything to add, I'll post it here. If you manage it in the meantime, be nice to see the pics of the mount close up.

Munchh, there's an almost close-up of tyhe mount on that Type 22 in Silent Sentinels.

Some interesting snippets emerged from the visit to Barrow Common. Our guide was, I think, 8 in 1945 and he has some interesting memories and handed-down stories of the period in North Norfolk.

Most promising is the memory of tanks (probably Churchill's, definitely not American) travelling through Brancaster on a regular basis from Titchwell to hard pads (either concrete or packed earth) on the Burnham side to shell targets on the marshes. He remembers that his mother was very worried about the crockery as the house shook when the tanks rumbled past. In the post-war period he could remember the circular shell craters on the marshes and being able to retrieve pieces of shell from the bottom of them.

Another story he told us was of a troop exercise, soldiers in rubber boats used the high tide (he says it must have been spring or autumn due to the extreme height if the tide) to assault the marshes. Their target was roughly the 9th tee of the golf course. A mortar had been set-up in the centre of the village and was dropping rounds onto the far shore - and he maintains that rounds were dropping short amongst the boats. A Bren was mounted by the front and was being used to "stitch the water".

I take this type of story with a slight pinch of salt. But there's usually a grain or more of truth, and the use of remote pads and satellite ranges for tanks based at Titchwell is interesting and could identify new targets to look for, or provide explanations for sites that don't make much sense at the moment. As soon as he mentioned the tank pads I wondered about the suspected Bofors position the Simon reported. If Titchwell used satellite ranges, the same might have been done at Weybourne and other training schools.

Munchh, never seen three aligned like that so close together. Vertical rail slot for a tank block?

Me neither until this set. And vertical rail socket is exactly what it is SG, complete with concrete cap is the rare part. It's actually part of a hairpin array (there are at least a dozen uncovered so far, all complete) from a previously unknown Roadblock currently undergoing careful excavation. I was shown this by a fellow enthusiast working on the project. Once the work is completed, it's likely to be preserved as a 'best of' example. I've only seen one other intact array and that was on a dismantled railway. Much of the roadblock remains are buried under 60+ years of tarmac or removed during roadworks sadly. The slotted concrete blocks for the horizontal steel beams are usually present though. Lot harder to remove.

Btw, could you point me towards the 'bofors position the Simon reported' thread you mentioned earlier, thanks. :smile:thumb

This is 6 pounder gun emplacement S AT 601 from the Taunton stopline, 50°46'43.20"N, 3° 0'30.00"W. Very open for a wide field of fire but poor protection level as a trade off.

http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab132/Munch099/Taunton%20Stop%20line/S%20AT%20601/100_1583.jpg

One shell inside the PB would have ignited the magazine and it's goodbye gun emplacement.

http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab132/Munch099/Taunton%20Stop%20line/S%20AT%20601/100_1586.jpg

Holdfast still present (probably for a Hotchkiss). I was informed by a weapons expert that the two pounder was considered more effective against the type of assault that was envisaged here and was quite often used in place of the 6 pounder. Luckily, we had more two pounders anyway. They were also deployed in open field positions around specific areas of the stoplines which sheds more light on the full defensive structure.

http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab132/Munch099/Taunton%20Stop%20line/S%20AT%20601/100_1584.jpg

There's far more to our anti invasion defences than the pillboxes and cubes most commonly noticed by the casual observer. What's more interesting to me is the complete layout and the tactical arrangement which allows for fuller understanding of what would have taken place had an invasion occurred.

That's an odd-one Munchh. I can't quite work out the orientation from GE, is the left-hand (from the gun's POV) embrasure covering the road to the "front" and the right-hand embrasure giving a view of the block on the bridge?

Blue line = Barbed wire
Thick orange line = AT ditch
Thick yellow line = Scarping
Thin red lines = Gun emplacement field of fire

The 6 pounder is covering the approach to the roadblock and the area to right and left of itself. S 47 (type 24) is cover for the gun emplacement and the roadblock. The enemy side is to the west. S 46 is covering the railway as is S 45. An additional field position is likely although not shown on the engineers plans.

Hope this is illuminating SG. :smile

An extremely open position then, and the height of the embrasure seems excessive. Maybe it was also sand-bagged to reduce the height of the opening?

It also looks a bit tight for the crew. The field version had a crew of six (some photos and details here (http://www.wwiiequipment.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=74:6-pounder-anti-tank-gun&catid=40:anti-tank&Itemid=58)), I can't find a reference to the crew for an emplaced gun, presumably gunner and loader in the 'box and any other crew were in slit trenches to the rear? It must have been easier to pass ammunition through from the rear than use the magazines under the embrasure table. Accessing magazines in the 'box would have interfered with the traverse and required an additional man inside the enclosed space.

At least with such an open embrasure the cordite fumes would have dispersed quickly.

It was envisaged to use this;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QF_6_pounder_Hotchkiss

Adaptation was the key as with most things stopline related. Apart from the pedestal for the gun, there would have been nothing else in the box to obstruct the crew. Two men were all that was required to actually operate the gun but the garrison for the box would have been 8. This stopline was manned by regular troops incidently, not Home Guard. :thumb

No, I've only come across evidence of intention to use the Hotchkiss in the 'schedule of completed works' from Nov 1940. I believe that most weren't fitted anyway. I've also come across commentators who say this type of pedastal mount wouldn't accommodate the Hotchkiss. This is the 3rd one I've seen on the TSL and all are described as '6 pounder gun emplacement' so it's not clear one way or the other. :smile

Wow!!! That last pic :clap:clap

What sort of shell could cause that much damage???
What must it have been like to be inside when under attack?
How loud must the sound have been when it took a hit??
Did anyone die??
The questions are endless...

Travelling around the "Fens" today with BK on some explorations! Came across these two lovely Pillboxes one protecting a bridge and the other open, flat ground (of which there is enough around these parts). Both are the ubiquous Type FW3/28, "2 pounder anti-tank" pillbox. Apart from the gun, they would have had also 3 Light machine Guns, and would have been manned by a garrison of 10 men.

Is the third one a 28a as well, or a straight 28? Looks like a 28.

There's a couple of variant 28s locally I keep meaning to have a look at.

The third one is a standard 28 with no internal wall protecting the SMG slits. The first one has the internal wall and looks slightly longer as well.

Smiler, have you got a map reference for that structure? Looks quite small.

Thanks Smiler.. it has an ADS DOB entry (http://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/archives/view/dob/ai_full_r.cfm?refno=13160&), but there's no description or type given. Looks very tight inside.

Anyone any ideas what this may have been? It is in a garden on the cliff top at Kessingland, Norfolk. There looks to be a half buried door way as there is a concrete lintel present. There is no signs of any loop
holes, even that have been filled in ????

Simon, I've buggered up my download of eDOB and can't get a fresh copy until the GE Community Boards are back up and running. The original DOB dataset doesn't show anything in the immediate area of Kessingland. To the south near Covehithe there is a "Suffolk square" pillobox with 8 loopholes that looks similar in plan (12' square with an entrance on the side). Further north towards Lowestoft there's the Coastal Defence Battery close to Pakefield.

But.. the priginal DOB (the only version I can access at the moment) is bloody awful for Norfolk, missing loads and full of errors. It has much improved since then, and there's a good chance that the current version of the eDOB will have this on it (whatever it is). Plan B isa visit to County Hall.. I should be able to give you the document reference of the map you'll find it on as long as it's within a couple of miles of the high tide line.

I can see on the first shot where one MG embrasure has been filled in, if you can enable Notes on your Flickrstream I'll highlight it on the photo. Giving a Where's The Path link or a OS grid reference would also be useful.

Thanks for that, I will enable notes on my Flickr. I will also find you a map reference.

My son found this gem still in place about two miles up the road from us, it is in the corner of Alby churches grave yard. There were two more actually down in our village of Aldborough, the farmer has both
standing in his yard, he even has a spigot mortar round that was fired by the home guard during a test.
