On 15th January 1945, Lancaster LM720 was returning to its home base of Skellingthorpe, due to bad weather they were diverted to Carnaby but LM720 did not divert to Carnaby but headed for Langham. On approach to land in bad visibilty due to drizzle LM720 struck the main pylon. This collapsed on the nissan hut where operators were working, no operators were injured, but sadly the seven crew of LM720 were killed. During rememberence week a memorial service is held there and poppys laid. The site is worth a visit and we know that there were rooms underground, this was confirmed by a local who could remember the underground works being built first when he was a child. We found several hollows in the ground and even started digging but got disturbed, we will return.
Thanks
