The Bass Maltings were built between 1892 and 1905, designed by H S Couchman. A central water tower is surrounded by eight identical brick pavilions, the total frontage being over 1000 feet. The scale of the place is breathtaking and it is a major landmark that can be seen for miles around.

The Maltings closed in the 1960s but were used for a few years for battery chicken production and according to one sign we saw today, by the Lincs. Area Health Authority for storage. Several of the buildings were seriously damaged by fire in the mid 70s but there are plans to regenerate this iconic building with the help of Prince Charles and The Phoenix Trust.

Visited today with MagooČ, Scary Mary, Riklus and James Arnold, a torrential downpour put paid to any ideas of exterior shots but it's on our list for a revisit on a sunny day.

The spiral staircase went straight into my top 10 urbex staircases :D

The top of the staircase led to yet more stairs and a long trek ensued to the top of the water tower.

when we went spent some time on top of the tower
watching the neighbors having a BBQ!

I just read that as you had a BBQ on top of the tower, can just imagine you setting off with a sack of charcoal strapped to your rucksack :laugh

It was a bit wet for that today.

We seem to be on a bit of a lucky roll, sadly uni work is calling and it's all likely to slow down for a few months... I keep saying this is the last one but I don't quite believe it yet :D
