info and old picture taken from a plaque outside the cave...

standing at the top end of the jordan watercourse, the grotto is a fine example of a victorian rockwork cave, then popular in public parks.

the grotto is believed to have been built in about 1870 by french rockwork specialist M.Combaz, who was brought in by the parks designers Andre and Hornblower.

It is also known as Old Nicks Caves.

there are many other man-made rockwork features throughout the sefton park including the cascades along the watercourses, the rockwork tunnel, and smaller grotto next to the boating lake, and the romantic 'Fairy Glen' on the upper jordan.

The main grotto structure remains largely intact with three openings, and a staircase leading to an opening in the roof.

The internal chamber once contained waterfalls and cascades that fell over the rockwork and flowed into the mirror pond.

restoration work reinstated the mirror pond and one of the cascades within the cave.

the link with the lower jordan has been re-established across mossley hill drive with water from a new borehole.

short but sweet this one, nice to see it was to do with this http://www.urbexforums.com/showthread.php/10899-River-Jordan-Culvert-Liverpool-Dec-2010 what me and kevsy21 discovered back in 2010.

once open to the public now closed and gated off for reasons due to....health and safety....and to stop tramps living in there...only what ive been told....and its supposed to be listed aswell.....

had a look at this a while ago with a mate ,and recently me and kevsy21 was in the area and decided to take a look ,im pretty slim so it wasnt hard for me to get inside....not much just a cave with a staircase.......

apologies for the pics some where shot in 1600iso....the sun was a pain in the arse too beaming directly in the cave
