Dear Coops (and all the usual suspects, obviously)
As requested, here are some pictures from Pervomaysk Missile Base.

O2E x
As part of the 2011 Chernobyl trip we travelled 300km south of Kiev to visit Pervomaysk Missile Base. This is, apparently, the only nuclear missile launching silo facility that wasn't demolished under the 'Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty' (START agreement) with the USA, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The base has been converted into a museum (Linky linky link link (http://rvsn.com.ua/en/)). It is run by members of the 46th Nizhnedneprovskaya Rocket Division who were stationed here. These chaps are immensely proud of what the USSR achieved and they still throw around plenty of propaganda about how they were boss and the Americans were bulbs.
When we arrived it was absolutely bollocking it down. So, naturally, I decided to go with the group who visited the outdoor exhibits first.
This mother fucker is the R-36M2 (NATO code RS-20V) missile. Or, if you want to make it sound double hard, the SS-18 Satan. It was capable of carrying 10 nuclear warheads, had a range of 11,000km and was, unnecessarily, accurate to 220m.

Mr. SS-18 Satan needed this inconspicuous number to taxi it about.

When the taxi got to an uphill section it needed a bit of a push from this little chap.

There were lots of other things to enjoy outside but I hadn't packed my speedos so headed indoors to visit the 12 storey, underground command post.
The following images are brought to you by the letters no tripod and iso 6400.

Jesus Christ O2E, you're in a Russian nuclear missile command post, heading towards the control room, and you take a picture of a phone!? Yes, but it's a phone in a Russian nuclear missile command post. Fair do's, boss.
A phone.

big door. BIGGER DOOR.

And into the control room. This tiny room is 35m underground. 2 people lived here for 45 days at a time, no doubt sharing plenty of lols whilst waiting for orders from the outside to blow the World up.
Buttons. Lots of buttons.

This was the seat where the person who couldn't be trusted sat.

And this was the seat where the magic would have happened.

The button under the flap, bottom left of the next picture, fired the missile. There were 2 buttons that needed to be pressed simultaneously. The other is visible elsewhere in this post *points up*.
