Visited with The Stig, Tassadar and DHX

This was our final visit in the week and it came in the form of two seperate sites for the same explore.

History (from Wikipedia)

The cable car was built in 1939. A workforce of 300 men built the plant at a rate of 2.1 km / month . The decision to build a cable car was taken for comparison with other modes of transport: road, rail and even cargo ships through Hjälmare channel. A cable car proved most cost effective in the long run, which was important because transportation at that time was an integral part of the total price of cement produced. The planning took particular account of the natural environment, particularly at the junction with Hjälmaren.

Limestone from Forsby-crime coarse crushed and sorted by hand. Stenkrosset, two different varieties, was then in stock in three silos. Linbanevagnarna passes under the silos where they turn, and loaded automatically. At the terminus of Köping emptied carts automatically, limestone finkrossas and put on layers of cement production.

The cable car is supported by 235 pillars of concrete and is divided into four sections with stations in Koskela and Köping and at bends (angle points) Granhammar, Ore Berga
and Knot Hill. 10 of these poles are high special posts where cable car crossing the Strait Helmets and Arbogaån, the highest in 45 m drive stations located in Koping, Ore Berga and Koskela. In addition, 12 pieces clamping stations, and at eight intersections by car or train is a safety net in concrete frames established. The lime was transported in 750 bins, each of which can carry 1200 kg for a capacity of 90 tons / h. At its launch in January 1941 The track was the world's longest cable car with single suspension cable (cable car Massawa - Asmara in Eritrea was completed the same year and was 75 km long, with double bärkablar). The record was proposed already in 1943 by cable car
Kristineberg-Boliden in Västerbotten, also built by Nordström.

During the 1970s, tested increase in load from 1200 kg / trolley to 1350 kg / trolley, this was done by acquiring new baskets with bulging bottom, and weld on a higher upper edge on the others. Just As with treskiften the cable car Kristineberg-Boliden so stopped this after a time when it appeared that the effective transport capacity decreased due to outages and increased maintenance requirements. The system also incorporated baskets from abandoned Nordströms-ropeways, including Rejmyre , Kvarntorp , Stora Vika and Lanna .

Loading, unloading and or enable the carts were mechanically automated right from the start. 1967 introduced automatic operation of relays and thus lost between stations in Granhammar and Knot rock their staffing. 1987 saw further modernization with computer control and radio. The cable car was also used to some extent for the raw materials to salpeterverken in Köping.

1974 hit cement plant was uneconomic, and halved the capacity in that one of the two RDFs closed. 1977 was even closed the second furnace and cement production ceased. The cable car has hitherto been in continuous operation for 36 years now became stationary. 1980 had several factors to come that led to the cable car again was commissioned - this time in the simple case: Demand for agricultural lime increased, and lack of lime coated paper led to increased demand even there. In addition, the rising oil prices, a favorable cost position for the cable car, which is powered.

Calcium transport then continued until 1997 , when demand for Forsby lime reduced to the point that the need for transport cheaper reached by truck. In June 1997, the track was taken out of service and had transported a total of 25 million tonnes of limestone and has been in operation for 53 years. This made Kalklinbanan the cable car at 10 km class held longest running in the world (next is the cable car Kristineberg -Boliden , which ran for 44 years). Then there is the cable car preserved as industriminne and test run annually. 2003 was designated the cable car to the Year industriminne of Swedish industriminne Association .

Track owners Nordkalk submitted demolition applications to Kalklinbanans five municipalities in July 2012. According to the application, the concrete pillars are left in the same way as for the demolition of the cable car Kristineberg-Boliden . Ropes, baskets and other facilities that span and angle stations will be demolished and sold for scrap.

That's pretty nifty - and industrial cableways are getting quite rare nowadays..
