Holdings Country Pottery - LancashireJune 2012

Brief History

Holding's Country Pottery was founded in 1842 by James Holding, but it was not originally located, where it is now. The original pottery was built a short distance away in Gaulkthorn, another outlying area of Oswaldtwistle.
In 1860 James Holding moved his business to Broadfield, then in 1900 his son Grimshaw Holding set up the pottery on the present site.
From then on the pottery stayed put and the business passed down from father to son until it's decline.
Originally it was powered by a steam engine (not longer in situ) but the line shafting is still present.

The Explore

This was a pretty amazing site, probably the best one on the trip because of the amount of things to photograph! Generally a pretty easy explore apart from the lack of walking space in some areas - it's hard trying to avoid standing on things! I had searched many reports before deciding on this location and it was all based on a couple of images that I really liked, including one of a British Flag which I can only say has been stolen now... unless I missed something :( I was very shocked to see alot of personal family photographs around the site including Wedding pics. I find it hard to believe that the owners would not want any of these back?!

I had heard that the Holdings family still lived in the area too. If this is true, it seems a bit odd that they wouldn't go to the Pottery and collect their memories. The number of photographs, letters and other personal property left behind is crazy!

Thanks Mr Beardy :)

Your watermark ruins your photos, also isn't "UrBECKZ Photography" what everyone does here...?

Don't they live at the houses at the front? There was a guy who got twitchy when we had a LOLBBQ here after deciding it was a bit of a fetid shithole.

My watermark could be alot worse but I like it and that's all that counts lol and yes it's what everybody does but it's also the website domain that I own (amongst many others) so it seems fitting ;-)
